This release is a way for us to share 'Our Island' beyond the song, its 60-page booklet gives full lyric translations along with artists' insights into their songs, and illustrations of the artists created from cultural elements and nature grant us a pathway to explore their cultural perspectives. With a hands-on meditation of creating your own globe, ‘Our Island’ is in your hands.

‘Our Island’ was recorded remotely from our island homes. Many of us have never met in person, we are yet to discover if we have legs. Online we shared our stories, songs, concerns and loves, usually interrupted by Sammy’s spontaneous Kabosy solos, Putad, Vaiteani & Luc’s children or our internet freezing again (even in the tropics!).

We could support each other in our concerns for our planet, we know at times these feelings are overwhelming, that’s a healthy response, but know you are not alone, there are many sharing these feelings. We are a part of a movement, a momentum for cultural change which puts our relationship to our planet at its core.

Available at our concerts, bandcamp & our website.

about

from Emlyn -
Living Ocean is this amazing percussive groove
that is just celebrating our living ocean. The ocean
is full of wonders and creatures, so diverse and
colourful. How could we do this album without
having this song to just celebrate this daily festival
that the ocean is? Lively! Living Ocean is a fusion
between the drums of the Pacific Ocean by Airileke
with our rhythms of the Indian Ocean. We are playing
plastic waste washed up on our beaches upcycled
into instruments such as plastic Ravanns, shakers
and percussion, imagined and created by Kan, my
genius friend. It is a message that our oceans need
to be respected and celebrated, not poisoned with
our waste. Living Ocean is just putting this daydream
into music, the beauty of our ocean and its corals,
may we be blessed to enjoy our living ocean.

from Airileke

"My approach to music is that it comes from
the beat first. Like the heart beat, the first rhythm,
the first sign of life. The first drum I heard was the
Gaba from my grandfathers, then came the Log
drum, the Garamut, from my neighbours. At a root
level we use it for communication, for ceremony,
not for entertainment. Now we communicate on a
worldwide scale… to connect, to re-connect and
re-unite. Rhythm reminds me of family, even though
we are separated by oceans the rhythm is like
home. It speaks of youth and ancestry, history and
future. To keep us connected in our daily life to the
heart ... family."

lyrics

Spoken by Susan In English of Vanuatu

When you see the ocean
You will know
That this is my ocean too

Originally sung by Emlyn in Creole of Mauritius

(All the names of the fishes in the sea )
Spangled Emperor, Flathead Mullet, Tuna,
Thumbprint Emperor, Macro, Yellowstripped
goatfish, zero zero, Bluespine Unicorn fish,
Swordfish — (x2)
Oyster, Giant clam, Calamari and Konokono
All that mix in the ocean
The wonders of the ocean

O wo o wo o wo — (x2)
O wo o wo o wo
Dolphins jumping, whales dancing
People fishing, swimming, some are surfing
Surfing on a magic carpet
In the horizon,
waves are forming like a camel's back
The wonders of the ocean
o wo o wo o wo — (x2)
